Mayor Billett Welcomes Association du Souvenir des Cadets de la France Libre Delegation to Bewdley

In a heartfelt tribute to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Cadets de la France Libre, Mayor Cllr Sarah Billett of Bewdley extended a warm welcome to a delegation from the Association du Souvenir des Cadets de la France Libre. The visit, which took place on April 15th, was a poignant acknowledgment of the enduring alliance and sacrifice of the Free French during World War II.

The history of Bewdley during World War II is deeply intertwined with the heroic efforts of the Free French. It was during this tumultuous time that a group of adolescent cadets made their way across the English Channel, seeking refuge and support. Visited by General Charles de Gaulle himself, Ribbesford House served as a vital sanctuary, providing the Free French with a strategic base of operations. The Howell family, former owners of Ribbesford House, played a pivotal role in facilitating this alliance, solidifying Bewdley’s place in the annals of the Free French’s struggle for liberation.

Accompanied by former Attorney General Dominic Greaves, the visit of the Association du Souvenir des Cadets de la France Libre underscored the enduring bond between Bewdley and the Free French. The delegation’s presence served as a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience displayed by the Cadets de la France Libre.

During their visit, Mayor Cllr Sarah Billett hosted the delegation for a meal at the Mug House Restaurant, Severnside, Bewdley. The warm reception showcased Bewdley’s hospitality and charm, leaving a lasting impression on the guests.

The visit culminated in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at St. Anne’s Church, honouring the memory of the Cadets de la France Libre. Mayor Cllr Sarah Billett graciously accepted a certificate on behalf of the Free French, bestowing “honorary membership” of Association du Souvenir des Cadets de la France Libre to the town of Bewdley.
