Bewdley Left Bank Flood Risk Management Project Update 11 March – 15 March 2024

Much of the work this week has taken place around Millside Court (Area 5). The concrete structure found as part of our excavations has been broken out and replaced with cohesive material won from other excavations elsewhere on the site, helping towards the sustainability of the scheme.

The blinding of the excavation in area 5 is now complete with work beginning next week to prepare the site for installation of trench sheets. These will allow us to cut off ingress of water into the working area for the next stage of construction.

Severn Trent Water (STW) have confirmed that it is safe to remove the previously unknown and unused manhole chamber in area 5. The removal is required because the manhole chamber is located in the middle of our flood wall alignment, and it would not be viable to work around it. In order to undertake removal safely, we need to install trench sheets to provide stability of the excavation walls.

The majority of the piles that have been installed along Stourport Road (Area 4 & 3) have been cropped and the integrity testing completed. Once all the piles are completed, the concrete blinding will commence. The completed piles in this area are now ready for concrete blinding in the coming weeks.

Further works are being completed in the Pleasant Harbour House (Area 0) section of the site to prepare the area as an access for the piling phase. Fencing is being put in place as well as root protection track matting, followed by access track and piling pads to build a route through for the Area 0 works.
Cadent Gas works adjacent to the bridge to divert the gas main around the wall foundations are ongoing.

Programme update:

Overall, the project remains close to the programme due to faster installation of piles than expected.

Community engagement sessions

We will endeavour to provide weekly updates; however, we will not be able to answer all questions emailed to us. If you have any questions, please speak to our Environment Agency team member who will be at St George’s Hall on the following dates:

  • 26 March between 11:00 – 2pm
  • 9 April between 11:00 – 2pm
  • 23 April between 11:00 – 2pm

Following the community feedback, we are also hoping to book an evening drop-in session in April. We are currently finalising the date and location, and we will provide an update to our webpage and contact our mailing list once we have this confirmed.
